Participative media and space installation
It is possible to understand rules as a kind of regimentation, which is basically nothing more than coercion. Or agreements that make a game possible in the first place. Or control processes, as they take place in nature and other systems. The word system stands for a collection of elements that relate to each other in a dynamic way. An economy is a system, the after-work traffic in a city is a system, the city itself is a system. A forest is a system, a flock of birds is a system, an ocean is a system. A human being is a system, the cell in his body is a system. Positive feedback loops are connections that magnify and amplify what is happening. Negative feedback loops have a balancing effect and prevent a system from exploding or imploding due to ongoing reinforcement. The behavior of the system evolves from their dance – and this is often unpredictable. A dynamic system can suddenly transition from one state to the next. Such a change spreads in all directions.
The installation Self//Regulation provides six different switching and regulating mechanisms with which visitors can trigger texts, sounds, video and light moods, set them in relation to one another and in this way shape communication and feedback processes. Their control decisions amplify or minimize content-related, sonic, and emotional tendencies, force interactions, and weave structure and chance into an aesthetic work again and again.

Es ist möglich, unter Regeln eine Art von Reglementierung zu verstehen, die im Grunde nichts anderes ist als Zwang. Oder Vereinbarungen, die ein Spiel erst ermöglichen. Oder Steuerungsvorgänge, wie sie sich in der Natur und anderen Systemen abspielen. Das Wort System steht für eine Ansammlung von Elementen, die auf dynamische Weise miteinander in Beziehung stehen. Eine Volkswirtschaft ist ein System, der Feierabendverkehr in einer Stadt ist ein System, die Stadt selbst ist ein System. Ein Wald ist ein System, ein Vogelschwarm ist ein System, ein Meer ist ein System. Der Mensch ist ein System, die Zelle in seinem Körper ist ein System. Positive Rückkopplungsschleifen sind Verbindungen, die vergrößern und verstärken, was geschieht. Negative Rückkopplungen wirken ausgleichend und verhindern, dass ein System aufgrund einer andauernden Verstärkung explodiert oder implodiert. Aus ihrem Tanz entwickelt sich das Verhalten des Systems – und dieses ist oft unvorhersehbar. Ein dynamisches System kann plötzlich von einem Zustand zum nächsten übergehen. Eine solche Veränderung breitet sich in alle Richtungen aus.
Die Installation Self//Regulation stellt sechs verschiedene Schalt- und Regelmechanismen bereit, mit denen die Besucher*innen Texte, Klänge, Video- und Lichtstimmungen auslösen, zueinander in Beziehung setzen und auf diese Weise Kommunikations- und Rückkopplungsprozesse gestalten können. Ihre Regelentscheidungen verstärken oder minimieren inhaltliche, klangliche und emotionale Tendenzen, forcieren Wechselwirkungen und verweben Struktur und Zufall immer wieder neu zu einem ästhetischen Werk.
